I will need 2 short essays for a midterm. The actual topics will be revealed to me in about 3 hours (12:30 PST, 08:30 GMT). The class up to this point has been about East Asia, mostly it’s history over the last 150 or so years. I will attach a few of the readings that need to be referenced and I can provide more as well. The main readings come from these texts: Pamela Kyle Crossley, What is Global History? 2008 Leonard Blussé, Visible Cities: Canton, Nagasaki, and Batavia and the Coming of the Americans, Harvard University Press, 2008 Warren Cohen, East Asia at the Center, Columbia University Press, 2000 Odd Arne Westad, Restless Empire: China and the World Since 1750, Basic Books, 2012 The following is what the professor has sent out about the work: The purpose of the essays questions is to test your understanding of the readings and lectures and your ability to analyze them. Please note that a good essay will: a) develop a strong thesis; b) explore the logic of an argument; c) use evidence to support the argument. The questions will be something like the following: Explain the transition from the Canton system to the Treaty Port system. Complaints from British over the Chinese regulations on foreign trade. Explain the impact of WWI on Asia. Explain the role of Asia in WWII. What is a developmental state? How is it different from a regulatory state? What are the characteristics of the developmental state of Japan? Explain the development of the four Asian tigers.
