Choose a scene from one of the works of literature essay
Choose a scene from one of the works of literature which we have read in which a character is confronted with an ethical dilemma and write a seven page paper about how this dilemma would have presented itself to ancient Romans. For instance, you might choose Romulus’ plan to populate Rome by stealing the Sabines’ women, Dido’s decision to welcome the Trojans to Carthage, or Perpetua’s choice between obeying her father’s pleas or carrying through with her martyrdom.
Then accomplish two things with it: First, explain the situation. Be sure to include as much detail and specific points about the scene to demonstrate your close reading and to clearly illustrate the problem which the character faces in coming to a decision. In this part, be sure to address the following points: Explain what is at stake for the person in making this choice. What reasons does the text give, either implicitly or explicitly, for the character’s decision? What values are at play in this justification? Also, what are the consequences for the character and for others in the story?
Second, analyze this decision according to one of the ethical theories presented in class: Academic virtue ethics, Stoicism, or Epicureanism. You can find them summarized in this outline, and you can look at the texts that we review from Cicero, Seneca, and Lucretius. Address the following points: Explain the ethical theory you are planning to use. Apply this ethical theory to the scenario in the text. What choice would your ethical theory find to be the most ethically sound in the situation? What would you do in the same situation? On what ethical principle would you base your decision?
